Smile is a Reflection of Friendliness from Indonesian Culture

Every culture has their own characteristic which was built for many years. Every country has a cultural diversity that might not having by another country. And of course, people who don’t familiar with those culture may feel uncomfortable. A little example, you may ever heard, don’t speak with stranger or even smile. But we do, in Indonesia. Believe or not, smile is a reflection of friendliness from Indonesian culture.

No exact literary that talking about this tradition. So, all I want to talk is about a little picture why we are doing this. There are many reasons that involved why we always smile to the foreigner, even the stranger one. So, don’t be surprised if Indonesian’s people according to many research was placed in the highest rank in the most smiling country ever.

But why Indonesian’s people always keeps smiling in every way? Like I told you, there is no such literature which talking about it. So, this is my answer based on my pure assumption as Indonesian’s people. And hope it will help you little.

·        Cultural heritage

In the deepest mindset of Indonesian, smile to each other it’s a must. Indonesian society applied a moral punishment for people who stingy to give a little smile. You will be judged simply as arrogant person, and you will be no longer as a part of their society. They will refuse you from every chat or some association. Perhaps for that reason, they give a smile to each other even not in soul. By the time, this culture has taken their own part. ·        Social etiquette

In the social society, smile is a contact just like a verbal communication. When we meet a new one, we always begin something with smile. In the short term, smile is same with an ice breaker and the shortest introduction to start every conversation. It is recommended for everyone to give a smile back. We Indonesian people, no need to say hello or something to show our hospitality. Just a smile and the aura is going to be positive. Do you ever realize what the biggest Moslems country? I won’t deny it, is Indonesia. As the biggest Moslems country, it becomes a normal one if in every aspect of life is related to this religion. One of the big lesson in Islam that smile is worship or religious service or whatever you called. Smile is the easiest way and chipper way to do a worship. Because it doesn’t need anything to do, that’s why most of Indonesian’s people do smile. I know it’s not represent a full image of why we do smile. I don’t have capability to explain the detail, but next post I will try. At least you know the basic reason why me and Indonesian’s people do smile every time even with the foreigner or stranger.
